The implication of the title “lord of the flies”
This name – Lord of the flies – is mentioned in the novel only once (in his dialog to Simon), but not accidently this name became the title of the book.
In my opinion, Lord of the flies is one of the characters. He is that evil spirit who wants the people to hate, to frighten and to be frightened; he is the enemy of the every man.
I think that the author believes in his existence. If we read the novel as an allegory, the dialog between Simon and Lord of the flies is not a delirium. The evil proclaims his power, he tries to frighten, and he points Simon on the weakness of any man. But at the same time Lord of the flies doesn’t understand that he himself is nothing, he’s a head of the killed pig standing on the stick. From this point of view Simon’s death is not accident at all: lord of the flies kept his promise. He wants the people to look for their enemy everywhere – in the Beast, for example – but not there where he really is, not in their souls. Simon was the only who understands it, who sees the enemy there where he is, and the enemy killed him
