The story titled “A Bit of Singing and Dancing” was written by a novelist, children's writer and playwright Susan Hill. Author tells us story of a woman (Esme Fanshow), who had been left alone after her mother died. (В повести автор рассказывает о женщине (Esme Fanshow), которая осталась одна после смерти ее матери.)
The story can be divided into 2 parts. The first part describes the Esme’s memories about her mother.( История может быть разделен на 2 части. Первая часть о воспоминаниях о матери.) And the second part is about new Esme’s live after the mother’s death. (И вторая часть о новой жизни Esme после смерти матери.)
Mrs. Fanshow always was a very domineering woman and had never been interested in the opinion of her daughter.( В первой части рассказывается о том, что Мисис Фэншоу всегда была очень властной женщиной и никогда не интересовалась мнением своей дочери.) She was old and ill and her only entertainment was watching television variety shows.( Она была больна и единственным её развлечением был просмотр телевизионных шоу-варьете.) Mrs. Fanshow used to say:"I like a bit of singing and dancing, it cheers you up, Esme, it takes you out of yourself.” The only occupation for Esme for the past 11 years was watching after her bedridden tyrannical mother.( Единственным занятием Эсми за последние 11 лет был уход за матерью-тираном, прикованной к постели.)
The second part tells us how Esme finds freedom.( Во второй части Эсми обретает свободу) She realizes that now, after her mother’s death, she has no obligations and she owes nothing to anyone.( Она понимает, что ей не перед кем отчитываться, и она никому ничего не обязана.) She has a lot of plans about different purchases, traveling and other expenses. But Esme has realized that it would be useless extravagance and she has to save money for her old age. (У нее много планов относительно различных покупок, путешествий и других расходов. Но потом она осознает, что это ненужные расходы, и что она должна сохранить деньги себе на старость).
By an accident she finds a lodger and decides to lend one of the rooms in her house. (случайно она находит жильца и решает сдать ему одну из комнат в своем доме). Mr. Curry, a neat gentleman, travels selling cleaning utensils in winter time and changing his job in summer. (Мистер Кёри аккуратный джентльмен путешествует и торгует чистящими средствами зимой и меняет работу на лето). Everything is all right, their life is rather successful. He works and pays for living and food. (Все идет хорошо, он работает и платит за жилье и еду) She was cleaning house and shopping. In the evening they were reading and talking. (Она убирает дом и ходит за покупками. По вечерам они читают и беседуют). She likes him and even hopes for something more. (Он ей нравится, и она даже надеется на что-то большее). But the summer comes, and his second seasonable job began. Esme knows nothing about this job and is too shy to ask. (Но вот приходит лето, и он начинает свою вторую работу. Эсми ничего не знает о ней и стесняется спросить). But one day she decides to go for a walk and discovers what kind of job he has. He is just singing and dancing on the street. At first, Esme becomes angry, because she thinks he has taken her in, but after some meditations she understands that she likes truly a bit of singing and dancing and calms down. (Однажды она решает выйти прогуляться и понимает, что у него за работа. Он поет и танцует на улице. Поначалу она разозлилась и решила, что он ее обманул, но потом успокоилась, осознав, что на самом деле ей нравятся, когда поют и танцуют).
Thus, she becomes alive and discovers the real meaning of love a bit of singing and dancing. (Таким образом, она оживает и понимает, что значит действительно любить, когда поют и танцуют)
